CSI: American Carnage (Friday, April 19, 2019)

BENEATH THE SOUTHERN BORDER — Little Timmy, pup reporter, and the Professor are walking point in the backchannels somewhere near the southern border. Timmy says, Do you hear that? The Professor stops, takes his pipe from his mouth, and says, I don’t hear anything. What do you mean? Timmy says, That’s the point! You don’t hear anything. Just a second ago there were the faint wails of the children ripped from their mothers’ bosoms. There were shouts of loss. There was crying. Now, nothing. The Professor says, Yes. You are right. There is only silence and the drip, drip, drip of water seeping down the sides of the tunnel. I don’t understand. At that point, there is a rumbling of the ground. Stones are dislodged from the ceiling and fall all around. Quick, says Timmy to the strike force, get to the side, up against the wall. The rumbling grows more intense and a roiling rat-tat-tat fills the air and grows louder and louder. Clouds of dust whoosh down the tunnel, spreading everywhere, and then human voices are heard, growing louder and louder until their volume becomes so intense the strike force can hear nothing but the screeching words. No Collusion! No Obstruction! No Collusion! No Obstruction! Timmy puts his hands over his ears. I can’t stand it, he says. Presidential Harassment! Exoneration! Harassment! The words roll down the tunnel like great boulders. Sarah, Timmy’s friend from the resistance potluck, shouts, It is the autocrat! He is expanding! There will be no escape! The autocrat will suck up every available space and all available air. The Professor shouts, Put on your gas masks! There is no time to lose! The strike force breaks out their field masks and pulls them on. The Professor says, Turn on your communicators. The small group is able to breathe and speak while the tunnel fills with swirls of dust, falling rock, and the collective crowing of No Collusion! No Obstruction! The Professor says, Perhaps we should head topside. This is intolerable. Sarah says, There is no point. Everywhere will be the same. The autocrat apparently has released the Mueller report and is now claiming victory. The autocrat seeks total victory. He is now filling everything with himself. His words. His thoughts. His people. There is no escape. Unless there is a counter move to depose the autocrat, he will continue to expand until he takes over every thought, every body, every space in the land. He is like a burning lava flow. But, Timmy says, that’s not right. Sarah says, It may not be right, but it is inevitable. Only a strong counterforce can stop him and it may be too late for that. This is not a partisan issue, but I fear that is the way it will be framed and that is the way it will be thought of by those who think at all. The Professor says, Let’s head topside, at least we can breathe up there. Sarah says, For the moment, perhaps. — Friday, April 19, 2019
