CSI: American Carnage (April 1, 2019)

UNDER TEXAS — The Professor leads the strike force east, toward El Paso. The back channels remain dank,  filled with mist and confusion and the bones of discarded policies past. Water pearls everywhere. It drips from the ceilings, and every now and then, the wails of the children are heard. Little Timmy, pup reporter, walks next to the professor on point. He says, It’s a long way and the strike force is tired. The Professor says, We must maintain our focus, but perhaps we should rest. Okay, everyone, listen up. We are about 40 clicks from zero hour. Everybody take 5. Boris, genial triple agent, says, Click ees measure of distance, not time. The Professor says, Entropy production and degradation of energy are to be expected. We have not entered any wormhole systems as of yet. Take 5, mister. Boris throws himself on the ground. Sarah sits down next to Timmy. More children’s wails echo down the tunnel from the east. Sarah says, The autocrat makes use of all available tools to achieve his ends. He cares nothing for human feeling and frailty except to determine how to use them to his advantage. Timmy says, There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of children held behind razor wire under a highway overpass in El Paso. Sara says, Yes, everyone knows that. Why do you think that is? Timmy says, They say there are so many seeking asylum, 40,000 children expected this month, perhaps a 100,000 people in all and more on the way. Authorities claim they are overwhelmed. Sarah says, Remember when the autocrat’s cruel policy of ripping children away from the bosoms of their mothers first came to light? Timmy says, Of course. Sarah says, The autocrat’s cruelty was appalling. Timmy says, Right. They were keeping the children in bunkhouses and deporting the parents. Sarah says, And sending the children who knows where. But the point is, how many congresspeople and reporters and just plain folks were allowed to observe the conditions? Timmy says, No one. Nobody. They were actively stopped. Everyone was pushed away. That was the point. It was done in secret and exposed only thanks to great persistence on the part of a few reporters, some advocates, and congresspeople. Sarah says, Now they are letting everyone who has a camera come in and photograph and video tape and interview these people crowded under the bridge. Word is that a Starbucks has won franchise rights and will be setting up. It is like a zoo. They are crowded in behind cyclone fencing and razorwire.  Yet the pictures are all over the media. Why? Timmy says, Usually when you allow interviews and pictures you want the story out. Sarah says, Correct. The autocrat is using the tools of democracy to further his own ends. He is creating the appearance of crisis and confusion, spreading the story, complaining of being overwhelmed, complaining of lack of resources, complaining of caravans and Muslims headed north by the thousands, complaining of political opposition. Timmy says, It is ominous. Timmy and Sarah fall silent. The wails of the children recede and the back channel is filled with an eerie droning sing song voice. The voice is everywhere. There is no escape: The Democrats are allowing a ridiculous asylum system and major loopholes to remain as a mainstay of our immigration system. Mexico is likewise doing NOTHING, a very bad combination for our Country. Homeland Security is being sooo very nice, but not for long!
