WASHINGTON – Gina says, Did you feel that? Alex looks puzzled. What? he asks. Gina says, That breeze or whatever. It felt like something cold, something icy passed through here, like a gang of cut throats and communist traitors. Alex says, Who? Gina says, Forget it. You didn’t feel it? He says, No. She says, Maybe they unmasked the Whistleblower and caused a chilling effect. She briskly rubs her arms. Outside, the night darkens. She looks around. Gina says, It must have been the wind. Alex says, There is no wind. We’d better hurry. The president is demanding these papers. Anonymous stands in the corner of the room and looks on. He passes through the wall to the corridor and rematerializes by the Advil machine. Mick is hurryng past, lost in thought. Hey Mick, Anonymous says. Mick looks up, startled. He has a stack of memos in his arms. Anonymous says, What ya got there? Mick says, What are you doing here? These are Just some memos on the Ukraine cover-up my lawyer asked me to round up and get over to him. Emails and what not. I gotta scan them and send them off. Anonymous says, Hey, buddy. Let me do it for you. Because, you know, maybe you oughta look in on him. Last time I was in there, he had the Play-Doh out. He was playing with himself. Mick takes out a handkerchief and mops his brow. He says, Geez. Ok. Just scan these babies and drop them back in my office. I’d better check the lounge. Anonymous says, Does he know you’re suing him? Mick looks around wildly. Shhh! he says. Anonymous says, Hey, it’s a law suit. He’s gonna know. Mick says, Not if nobody says anything to him. And for god’s sake, keep it off twitter. Anonymous says, Not to worry. Mick stops at the elevator and waits. The Whistleblower walks up and stands next to him. He says, How’s it going, Mr. Mulvaney. Mick looks at him and says, You’ve got a lotta – what do you call it? – chutzpa to show your face around here. The whistleblower chuckles. You know how it is – national security threatened, a White House in chaos, a president gone mad. Somebody had to be the grown up in the room. Mick looks at him dismissively. He says, Why? We’ve got work to do and there isn’t much time. The Whistleblower says, You’d better get up to the lounge. There are howls coming from behind the door. Mick says, POTUS Shield is probably in there. They’re speaking in tongues. He likes that. The Whistleblower puts his hands in his pockets. He says, I don’t know. Couldn’t say. Take care, Mr. Mulvaney. He turns and walks away. — Sunday, November 10, 2019
